Mohair sweater

By

If you are looking to make a style statement or simply wanting to enjoy a finely crafted sweater, then a mohair sweater design should be the one for you.  Made from luxurious natural fibers from the Turkish Angora goats, this silk like fabric is known for being light, durable and warm.

Considered to be a luxury fiber, ranking up there with silk and cashmere, mohair fiber fabrics are known for their luster and sheen.  Other notable qualities include its wrinkle resistance, moisture resistance, its flame retardant properties and its high affinity for taking dyes.  In the centuries past, these goats were in such high demand that they were a protected export and weren’t introduced to the United States until as late as 1849.

Being most often spun into luxurious threads and yarns, these fibers have a wide range of common uses including winter scarves, hats, suits, socks, sweaters of course, and even carpets. The hair is harmlessly shorn from the adult goats twice per year, and each goat will typically produce 11-17 pounds if silky locks per year. The finer, softer yarns used for clothing is typically shorn from the younger goats before their fur gets too coarse from age.

Being an all season fabric, a mohair sweater can be a light and breathable knit, to being thicker and warm. Also being a “fake fur” alternative, mohair fabrics create an eco friendly alternative to real fur. The naturally soft and airy light weight properties will remain consistent, regardless of the knit or weave.

While this exquisite fiber is surprisingly durable, proper care still must be taken of you mohair sweater to enjoy the longest lifespan possible. Wash in lukewarm water with mild hand washing detergent only. Do not wring it dry but gently squeeze the fabric and lay it flat to finish drying. Don’t keep your mohair sweater on hangers in the closet, but fold them and store on a shelf or in a drawer. To fluff up your “fluffy knit” mohair sweater, and to reduce shedding, give it a light shake or gently brush it with your hand only.

Eva,

Are most mohair sweaters loosely woven enough to be almost see through? Would I have to wear a camisole so no one would see my bra?
