Large cushions - jazzing up your living space

In my own hunt for large cushions, I found that there was quite a differing array of what “large” actually meant. A large cushion can be a simple toss pillow used to warm up a fully made bed, or even be placed in the corner of a large chair or couch, as something to cuddle with during an evening in front of the fire place.

An “extra” large, or floor cushion, is something else entirely. These cushions are excellent for lying on and propping yourself up to watch TV, read a book or play a game. Some large cushions are even available with padded corner bolsters for leaning on and can seat several children or adults on one cushion. “Bean bag” style floor cushions are also popular, being filled with fire retardant polystyrene beans, and can be found shaped like small children’s couches along with the soft backrest bolsters.

Mattress shaped box floor cushions can be purchased, or made, along with a thick piece of foam padding. These are great for naps or as spare beds for guests, or children, when large enough. As well, ergonomically shaped cushions are widely available, such as a body pillow or a formed back rest cushion with armrests, which uses the floor as the seat. “Chair pad” style floor cushions are also perfect for extra seating when you have guests or simply just relaxing in front of the fireplace or TV. These cushions can be stacked and stored away when not in use, which is ideal for a smaller living quarters.

Floor cushions can have outdoor use when made with durable backings, such as with the FLUGS brand. The wild colors and stripes appeal to children as they play on the grass or deck.

A good floor cushion should be a made of fabric that is a little more durable than a standard toss cushion or pillow. They are generally found to be made of cotton, polyester (or combinations of the two), or denim, vinyl, fake fur, etc. The stuffing should be lightweight and could be polystyrene beads, polyester fiberfill, polyester fluff stuffing, or foam of various thicknesses. Consider “memory foam,” which will retain its original shape and last longer than standard foam padding.

The internet is full of large cushion styles, sizes, colors and patterns. Deals are a plenty, but shipping could be costly considering sizing. Local outlet stores may stock a smaller supply of larger cushions, usually at higher prices, but at least you will be able to see and feel the cushion before you buy. One more option is to have them custom made, or make them yourself, if you are handy with the thread and needle. This will be you only options if you have a specific fabric choice that can’t be matched commercially.
