Chair pads cushions

Lets face it, when the time comes to sit down and relax, we’d all prefer a chair with a little bit of padding. Perhaps you have that hard old wooden rocking chair that grandpa used to rock you to sleep in, that you just can’t bear to part with, but can’t stand sitting in. Or perhaps it’s a well used family room chair that’s in need of a new cushion. Maybe it’s your outdoor wicker or metal furniture that could use a few inches of foam. At some point, most of us who own a chair or two will have an interest in options for new chair pads cushions.

Having a seamstress for a mother in my family, having custom chair pads cushions on every chair in the house, whether they needed them or not, was never an issue. From a simple toss cushion to sit on, to extra thick padded, piped, box side panels along with coordinated button tufts, every chair had its pad. The clear advantage of a custom chair pads is being able to choose exactly the fabric you want. Perhaps you would like to match the drapery fabric, or the toss cushions on the nearby couch, or maybe just simple color coordinating. The downside of custom chair pads cushions is if you don’t know how to sew, you will have to probably pay a little more for someone to make them for you. For some, that may be worth it.

Often, the seat pads will not need to be anchored down in any way, especially if there are armrests to frame the pad in. In some cases, however, such as a simple wooden kitchen chair, I’d advise having tie straps sewn in at the back two corners to keep them in place. Also to keep in mind, if you go this route and have backrest cushions made, you will need all four corners tied in to the back of the chair. Be certain to consider the dimensions carefully as not all chairs may have an ideal tie down location at the exact cushion corners location. Another excellent option is to look into “Gripper” seat cushions (see pic at bottom). These cushions have a rubbery grip underpad base that should help stick to most chair surfaces.

Certainly, the internet is a great place to find chair pads cushions of all shapes, colors and sizes. Basic chair seat pad cushions are simple to find and fit. Peculiarly shaped form fit pads, however, may be a little more difficult to fit, especially if you can’t “try before you buy” …for example if you are needing to replace the custom fit 3” padding on your favorite rocking chair. So do your research, consider your options, and pricing, and make the best choice.

Consider the type of padding being used, whether it’s your custom made chair pads cushions or store bought. If foam is the medium being used, I’d highly recommend ensuring that it’s memory foam, especially for the thinner chair pads. Over time regular foam will flatten and permanently indent. Memory foam will retain its original form much longer.

If outdoor cushions for your patio set or swinging chair is what you are after, there are additional considerations to factor in. Please see my outdoor cushions hub for more information on this topic.

i'd suggest using a good memory foam. No adjustment necessary, and they shouldn't flatten out as quick as normal foam.

Where can you purchase memory foam for barstools that are round in shape?
